It’s true though; men are different from women in more ways than one would normally think. Due to their differences they are more vulnerable to some serious side effects of depression.</p>
<p>‘Vulnerable’ isn’t a word that’s often associated with males and that’s part of the problem.<br />
Men, as a rule, do not talk about their feelings. They don’t like to be thought of as vulnerable, weak, in need of help, or fragile. A man is much less likely to confide in a friend, a co-worker, spouse or medical professional that they are feeling depressed.</p>
<p>Depression affects men as well as women, yet the medical profession sees much fewer men than women because men do not seek help for this condition as much as their female counterparts do.<br />
Men feel the need to be powerful, in control, competitive and often neglect their mental health in the process of being ‘manly’.</p>

<p>Men have traditionally had the role of being tough and self-reliant, and sometimes the women in their lives hold that same view of the male role. A man wanting to talk about his feelings of vulnerability and fragility can be taken as a sign of weakness to some women and this can result in the loss of a relationship.</p>
<p>Because men are not inclined to believe they need help and think that it’s a sign of virility that they can handle whatever life throws their way-they are not often aware of the symptoms of depression. Instead of seeking help, men may try to compensate for their feelings of depression by increasing alcohol consumption or using drugs to mask their pain. This can result in risky behavior.</p>
<p>Some will spend more time at work and less time at home, leading to problems in relationships. If you’re suffering from depression you may be underperforming at work, feel less likely to talk than usual, you feel irritable, feel achy and you are worrying more and more about things in your life.</p>
<p>Physical problems, such as erectile dysfunction can result in depression in men. Occasionally depression can cause sexual problems, but the good news is that there are many treatments available to help with both.</p>
<p>Men should know that depression can affect them as well as women and need to know the signs:</p>

<li>Loss of appetite</li>
<li>Anxiety</li>

</ul>
<p>If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms it’s ok to talk to your doctor. You’re not superman. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak.</p>

With the imminent release of the newer iPhone, consumers have already lined up in anticipation of getting their hands on Apple’s latest product, which includes 3G technology as well as GPS functions. According to the study, the economical boom in China allowed many citizens to pursue consumer products, as the materialism mindset become ingrained in the youth, a corresponding rise in depression has also been established. Abela stated “Materialists have a fragile sense of self because their worth depends on attaining external things. The quality of their interpersonal relationships suffers and they feel more stress while pursuing extrinsic goals,”. When this fragile sense of self worth decreases, one may experience symptoms of depression such as lower self worth, or loss of control. In turn, the person may also chose to make further purchases in an attempt to stabilize their perception of worthiness.</p>
<p>The effects of depression has been well studied, in the cases of major depression, the effects can very well be measured in terms of months. Dr. Allison Conner, a psychologist, describes major depressions as causing extreme disturbances in one’s life, affected aspects includes: sleeping patterns, eating behavior, interpersonal relationships, among other aspects. In the severest of cases, loss of life may occur as a means of escaping from the problems. While medications labeled as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have shown effectiveness in combating depression, the fact remains that these drugs do not treat depression at the core, but serves as an instrument to alleviate the symptoms of depression. Additionally, the FDA stated that usage of SSRI by children and adolescents significantly increases the chances of suicides, a health risk for a significant group indulging materialism and battling depression. An alternative to medication is cognitive-behavioral-therapy(CBT). Unlike medications, a psychologist or therapist trained in CBT can help a patient deal with the underlying causes of their depression, without the side-effects that SSRIs present, and instilling a state of well-being even after treatment.</p>
<p>So, the next time you plan on making a purchase, ask yourself if you actually need the product, or merely just want it because its hip. Major brands often offer products that many other companies produce in a similar fashion, frequently for cheaper, and better. Most importantly, don’t let what you own be the judgment of your worth, and seek help if you constantly find yourself needing to buy the next trendsetter.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Recently I read a statistic about depression that surprised me. I had not been aware that 17% of people in the US are on anti-depressant medication. That means approximately one in 7 adults is relying on some help from medication to get through the day. I have no idea how many of these people are in their second half of life. It does indicate that a good number of people are turning to their doctors for help with symptoms of overwhelm and sadness for which anti-depressants provide relief.</p>
<p>Anti-depressant medications have made a big difference for people who struggle with biological depression. It has given many people the opportunity to function successfully in their lives. My focus in this article is on the people who are depressed because of the life situation they find themselves in. These are the people for whom anti-depressants indeed provide help but unless they take care of the underlying concerns their life situation will not improve.</p>
<p>For instance, anyone who is living in a home where there is addiction present - alcohol, drug, prescription drug- will feel oppressed by its presence. The longer the addiction continues the greater the effect will be on everyone. The addicted person will also suffer with depression because that is the effect of the substance. In both cases if the underlying problem of addiction is s not addressed the symptom of depression will manifest itself .</p>

<p>Relationships organize people. Anyone who has ever been in a job situation that is negative will feel helpless. Likewise couple relationships where one cannot freely be oneself can become stifling and lead to depression. Again, in both of these examples anti-depressions will give relief but they will not take care of the underlying problems. In order to address them there has to be a willingness to start grappling with how to change the situation that is upsetting.</p>
<p>I have found, in addition, to the two examples just mentioned, that in the second half of life people may become depressed because some medications for physical problems have depression as a side effect. There is one other area that I see frequently. When lives have become routine and there is no newness people feel bored and become lethargic. The answer to this state of depression is to start doing new things. Take a course, move to a new area, read to kids,open a business, walk regularly, meditate - anything that will interrupt the monotonous and introduce vitality and excitement. I have found that the people who introduce newness into their lives have, after a while, been able to go off anti-depressants because their new zest in life has naturally lifted their spirits.</p>

This is the time of year when children go back to school and parents make decisions about activities for the next nine months. Whether there are more resolutions, made during September or January, is a subject for debate.</p>
<p>Bearing this in mind, many Yoga studios design advertisements, flyers, brochures, mailers, and web sites for prospective students’ needs. In this time of plenty, after the “long lonely summer,” some Yoga teachers scramble to accommodate every perceived student need.</p>
<p>Some studios tie up crucial funds in Yoga mats and equipment. While it is true that you should have props available, there is no logic in buying Yoga mats for more money than your students will pay at the local retail store. Letting Yoga supplies sit in a closet, unused for five years, is a waste of space, time, and funds.</p>
<p>About new Yoga classes: Do design classes and workshops to meet needs that are in demand within your local community. If you live in a predominantly retired community, there may not be a large demand for Power Yoga, Kids Yoga, and Prenatal Yoga. On the other hand, if you live in the heart of a college neighborhood, there may be a limited demand for Senior Yoga classes.</p>

<p>This may sound like common sense, but sometimes we lack the information needed to understand the niche markets within our specific communities. If you receive numerous requests for a specific type of Yoga, you should have a workshop, which meets one to three times, to see if there is a real demand for it.</p>
<p>We often confuse ourselves by thinking our studios should be structured like a general store. There is nothing wrong with having a variety of Yoga styles to choose from, but there is no need for every program, if some classes do not attract students.</p>
<p>In some cases, the classes are in direct competition with each other. For example: If you have beginners, gentle, restorative, and rehabilitative on the list, you must give an in-depth explanation as to how they are different from each other. How will they help a student who knows nothing about Yoga?</p>
<p>It is important to listen to the opinion of someone who knows nothing about Yoga. We often forget how we originally perceived Yoga. It must be remembered that the term “beginner,” is a reflection of a lack of knowledge. Therefore, we must design our brochures and classes for beginners.</p>

<p>Dr. Madan Kataria is on to something, as laughter could be combined with Pranayama sessions for maximum benefits. In life, there is a shortage of laughing. Unfortunately, too many people take themselves too seriously.</p>
<p>If you feel foolish laughing for 20 minutes a day for good physical, emotional, and mental health, you may want to consider laughing alone, or joining a Laughter Yoga club. The benefits of laughing are too good to miss out on.</p>
<p>Yet, the average adult laughs less than 20 times per day. Children often laugh over 100 times in a day. No wonder so many adults and teens are so stressed out.</p>

<p>Laughter reduces stress, protects your heart, lowers blood pressure, and is a form of quick relaxation. You could watch comedies, or listen to comedy audio recordings on CD, while you are driving on your way to, or from, work.</p>
<p>If you want to avoid negative thoughts, you may want to reduce the time you spend watching the news or reading depressing stories in the newspapers. This does not mean you should avoid learning new things, but be selective about the type of information you read, watch, or listen to.</p>
<p>Good stories do appear on the news, but how many depressing stories will you have to mentally process before you find one. The old saying, “Bad news sells,” often applies. There are plenty of good magazines to read, radio stations to listen to, and television channels to watch, so be selective.</p>
